Vietnam Institute for Musicology

The Vietnam Institute for Musicology (VIM) is a government research institute which promotes an understanding and appreciation of the music of all the ethnic groups in Vietnam. They have a large collection of musical instruments, their own recording studios and a research staff of specialist musicologists.

The Institute has agreed to organize a special visit for FVH members. The visit will be in two parts. Firstly, a tour of the museum of musical instruments with an English speaking guide. Secondly a concert with the music of ten different ethnic groups with an English introduction of each song and time for us to ask questions between songs. Each type of music is played with different instruments – one of them having the stunning shape of a fishing boat! Each part of the visit will take about one hour.

VIM is located in My Dinh in the suburbs of Hanoi so FVH will organize transport from the centre of Hanoi to VIM. The total time including traveling will be about three and a half hours.

Bring your cameras – there are interesting pictures to make!
