A pianist, composer, lecturer and music producer. He graduated from the Faculty of Jazz and Light Music at the Music Academy in Katowice in 1991. He was the winner of Jazz Improvisation (Katowice, 1986), Jazz Pianists (Kalisz, 1989) and a finalist in the The lonious Monk’s Competition in Washington (1989). Joachim Mencel is also a lecturer at the Cracow Music Academy. He has run a jazz improvisation class at a summer music workshop in Aberystwyth in Wales and an improvisation composition class as a guest teacher at Webster University in Saint Louis (USA). In addition, he has delivered lectures alongside Brad Terry at a few American universities (incl. New Hampshire University).
He composes chamber music performed by classical musicians. Mencel has also composed film, ballet and pantomime soundtracks.
All of Mencel’s compositions are inspired by the poetry of distinguished artists from various countries, such as Jan Kochanowski, Emile Dickinson or Oscar Wilde, to name just a few.
