The French Cultural Center in Hue cordially invites you to the conference hosted by the French journalist Pierre Daum “Immigrants force – Indochinese workers in France 1939 – 1952”.
After seventy years of silence, now revealed a page of history in colonial Indochina, the “native” workers were treated in condition akin to slavery on French soil. The scandal lasted until the Liberation. The workers were returned to Vietnam from 1946. It was not until 1952 that the last of these men were finally able to revisit their homeland. A thousand made the choice to stay in France.
After three years of investigation, from the Marseille suburbs to Paris and Hanoi and the most remote villages of Viet Nam, Peter Daum managed to locate 25 of the last witnesses still alive from this “positive” page of French colonial Indochina. These are their stories restored to us today.
This conference will be translated into Vietnamese.
