Tuồng combines music, acrobatic dance, and theatre

Friends of Vietnam Heritage invite you to experience a magnificent performance of Hát Tuồng which will be held in a beautiful temple at the top of an art gallery near Van Mieu temple. Tuồng is a form of Vietnamese theatre created in the 13th century. It is similar to Chinese “Beijing Opera” combining music, acrobatic dance and theatre. Tuồng employs the use of stock characters, singers, dancers and clowns which are recognizable from their abstract and symbolic gestures. Their make-up and costumes are very elaborate and extravagant. Usually six musicians play stringed-instruments, wind-instruments and battle-drums.
