A unique possibility to experience exciting contemporary German literature up close and live: two of Germany’s most important contemporary writers, Ingo Schulze and Juli Zeh, are visiting Vietnam.

We would like to introduce Ingo Schulze who will read from his novel “Adam und Evelyn”, a love story set before the background of the summer of 1989, which has been translated into Vietnamese to coincide with his visit. This will be followed by a literary discussion with Ingo Schulze and Juli Zeh.

Ingo Schulze

Ingo Schulze was born in 1962 in Dresden, studied classical philology in Jena and worked in Altenburg as theatrical dramaturge and newspaper editor. He has lived in Berlin since 1993. His first book 33 Augenblicke des Glücks (1995) was the recipient of numerous awards. Simple Storys (1998) was awarded the Berlin Literature Prize with the Johannes-Bobrowski-Medal. His major novel, Neue Leben, appeared in 2005 and was honored in 2008 with the Premio Grinzane Cavour. For his short story collection Handy (2007) he received the Leipzig Book Fair Prize. In his novels and short stories, Ingo Schulze repeatedly focuses on the distillation of the great events of contemporary German history in the personal biographies of his figures, always with compassion and a deeply human vision. Ingo Schulze is a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin and the Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung. His books have been translated into 30 languages and the Vietnamese translation of Adam und Evelyn will soon be released.

Juli Zeh

Juli Zeh was born in 1974 in Bonn. She studied law in Passau and Leipzig and gained a parallel degree at the Deutschen Literaturinstitut Leipzig. Stays in the USA, in Poland, Hungary, Austria and in Bosnia-Herzegovina followed. Her various experiences in other countries as well as her studies in international law are evident in her novels. Her first novel Adler und Engel has already been translated into 29 languages. Her novel Spieltrieb was adapted for the stage in 2006 by the Hamburger Schauspielhaus. Alles auf dem Rasen. Kein Roman collects her critical essays on society, politics, law and literature which have appeared in major magazines and newspapers. For the Ruhr Triennale 2007, Juli Zeh wrote »Corpus Delicti«, her first theater piece. In 2007 the novel Schilf was published, in 2009 the prose version of Corpus Delicti.
