Goethe Institute Hanoi
From Goethe Institut:
In 2010 Vietnam and Germany celebrate 35 years of diplomatic relations. This is also the year that the city of Hanoi celebrates the 1000-year anniversary of Thang Long – Hanoi. As a birthday gift to the city and also as a thank you to her citizens and artists, the Goethe Institute presents the three-part exhibition “Hanoi – The City in Art”.
Another “Germany in Vietnam 2010” event. See our Feature Page for info on more events celebrating German Year on Vietnam.
Paintings, etchings, engravings, photography, but also video works and installations by more than 20 artists who have worked with the city of Hanoi as their theme, will be shown in a series of three exhibitions. “The City in Art” was curated by Natasha Kraevskaia and Lisa Drummond. One is herself part of the Hanoi art scene with her “Salon Natasha”, the other has for years been a profound expert on Vietnamese art, and both are bound to their theme with passion and scientific expertise.
Part 1: Hanoi: Nostalgic, utopian, romantic and idealized
Opening: Thu 25 Nov 2010, 6 pm
Exhibition: 25 Nov – 03 Dec 2010
About the exhibition: The first exhibition in the series shows a collection of works by artists such as Bui Xuan Phai, Toan, Vuong Thao, Brian Ring, Do Phan and Tran Nguyen Hieu, for whom Hanoi is a romantic and nostalgic place. These Hanois are more dreamy than melancholy, bright and airy than dark and muggy.
Following the exhibition opening at 7.30 PM we are pleased to invite you to a special jazz evening with Thärichens Tentett in the courtyard of the Goethe-Institut. The band from Berlin, who will open the European Music Festival in the Hanoi Opera House on Friday evening, will present a jam session with Vietnamese jazz musicians.
Part 2: Hanoi: Dystopian, realistic, and in a state of change
Opening: Tue 07 Dec 2010, 6 pm
Exhibition: 7 December to 13 December 2010
About the exhibition: In the second part of “the City in Art”, the focus is on Hanoi as an urban structure which is undergoing rapid change and upheaval. Romantic Hanoi is becoming a contradictory city which can be viewed critically. The exhibition will show works by Do Minh Tam, Vu Bich Thuy, Nguyen The Son, Vu Dan Tan and Nguyen Nhu Y among others.
Part 3: Hanoi Private/Public (André Lützen)
Opening: Thu 16 Dec 2010, 6 pm
Exhibition: 16 Dec – 30 Dec 2010
About the exhibition: The third part of “the city in art” shows the artistic research work of the Hamburg photographer André Lützen along the blurred border between private and public life in the Vietnamese capital. In his series Public-Private Hanoi the artist plays with the contradictions and paradoxical harmonies of these two poles.
