From DOCLAB:
You are invited to an exhibition and artist talk by our very first artist-in-residency, kYra Storm van Leeuwen – an artist from the Netherlands who is interested in cultural development and the seemingly absurd arbitrary notions that mark our lives. She received a MFA degree last summer at the Royal Conservatory at the department of ArtScience. For the past month, she has been working at DOCLAB on her on-going project entitled Foldable People.
The project Foldable People is a study in serial beauty. It critically investigates the idea of manageable and proportionable beauty in a categorised society. Increasingly, people need to meet strict social, economical and bodily requirements in order to be or become a functional and acknowledged member of society. Diversity is becoming standardized.
Foldable People is initially a data base, it continues to fill up with the measurements of people; at first chiefly Western Caucasians. However, since July 2010 the project has been travelling through Asia and the assortment of peoples grew.
The measurements in the data base are reflected upon the theories of Vitruvius’ [around 00 A.D.] who claimed a proportional formula was at the ground of human beauty.
This data has been used as a means to create very diverse art works. From a sculpture to an installation and a mural. The past month it has been applied within the creation of a generative animation [computer animation] during a working period at DOCLAB.
