From the Vietnamese Women’s Museum:
The Women’s Museum of Viet Nam has cooperated with the Embassy of the Republic of Finland to mount an exhibit, “Single Mothers’ Voices.” Twenty single mothers from Tan Minh Commune in Soc Son District, Ha Noi received training and cameras to photograph themselves, their lives, and subjects of importance to them. The 100 images introduced in this exhibit have been chosen from the 1,000 photographs the women took. The exhibit also displays portraits of 18 single mothers.

Here are true stories, words shared from lives of women with “one shoulder but two yokes” for these women must serve as both mother and father yet must also overcome fixed gender prejudices and low self-image to achieve happiness. This exhibit also shows the change in the community’s perceptions and actions regarding the issue of single women. It invites each of us to join hands to eradicate every hindrance and prejudice and to participate in realizing the goal of equality.
