Installation Exhibition of Tiffany Chung in Singapore
Singapore Biennale 2011
From Galerie Quynh:
Galerie Quynh is pleased to announce the participation of Tiffany Chung in the Singapore Biennale 2011. Chung will be premiering “Stored in a Jar: Monsoon, Drowning Fish, Color of Water, and the Floating World’ – an ambitious installation of a floating town comprising 43 model houseboats and 70 riverboats. This work highlights Chung’s ongoing investigation of urban planning and its impact on local communities given their histories, memories and ways of life.
Drawing inspiration from arcology, a set of design principles combining architecture and ecology, Chung incorporates elements of vernacular housing in floating villages such as Tonle Sap Lake (Cambodia), Halong Bay (Vietnam), Sanglaburi (Thailand), Srinagar (India), Sausalito (California, USA) and Japanese traditional farmhouses in Gifu and Yamaguchi to create a modern-day floating village replete with solar panels and vertical gardens. While the floating town reflects an idealized village marrying traditional structures and modes of life with modern arcology theories, its very existence hints at the darker theme of failed utopian communities.
