From Lac Viet Centre for Community Support & Development:
During the development process of Hanoi, public markets are considered the supplying sources of fresh food and vegetables at reasonable prices for the city’s residents. At the same time, these markets are the open places, helping to strengthen the social communication and to preserve traditional cultural values of the nation. However, for the past few years, they have been being replaced by supermarkets, hypermarkets, and shopping or office centers.
Speakers: Dr. Stephanie Geertnman, Dr. C. Michael Douglass, Dr. Le Thi Bich Thuan, Dr. Ngo Thi Thuan, and Dr. Liling Huang.
Will Hanoi make the same mistakes as other medium income countries did that was to pursue development targets, and unintentionally bypass chances to access fresh and low-cost food and vegetable sources of the people, replace social communication environments with apparent beauty?
Dr. Architect. Stephanie Geertnman from HealthBridge Canada will analyze reasons why public markets become an important factor of a livable city. At the same time, she also proposes some necessary polices and actions to insure that people can access fresh and healthy food sources.
This informal discussion presents different ideas from Dr. Ngo Thi Thuan from Hanoi University of Agriculture, and Dr. Le Thi Bich Thuan, Vice Director of Vietnam Institute of Architecture and Planning (VIAP).
Especially, Dr. C. Michael Douglass from University of Hawaii and Dr. Liling Huang from National Taiwan University will analyze experience lessons from all over the world so that all scholars and people in Vietnam will have the right view on the global trends.
