Who is Phong Bui?

He is currently curatorial advisor for P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, Museum of Modern Art affiliate, New York, and editor and publisher of the monthly journal ‘The Brooklyn Rail’. Artist statement:
My life as an artist has been an adventure ever since I left Vietnam 31 years ago. And one of the most adventurous and rewarding aspects of what and why I became an artist, who is also a publisher/ editor/ curator/writer and teacher, has stemmed from the idea of a community that is based on a certain larger and governing intellectual premise. And this is a result of a life long desire to break free from the political/social constraints, as well as the personal assumptions due to the predisposed prejudices from particular upbringings.
Like Joseph Beuys before me, I’m as equally invested in his idea of “social sculpture,” which is similarly motivated by the utopian belief in the potential of art to transform society. Thereby upon the invitation of San Art I thought of nothing else but my dreaming of a social organism as a work of art that could perhaps manifest as a token of my homage to the community of creative individuals in my very first trip to Vietnam since 1980.
