Douglas Jardine, a professor at Hanoi University, will continue his series of monthly lectures with an illustrated talk about the Red City – the influence of the former Soviet Union on Hanoi city landscape. This lecture explores the impact of the friendship between the Soviet Union and Vietnam on the cityscape of Hanoi. From monumental architecture to public housing and city planning the ideology of these partners attempted to build the ideal socialist city. We will explore how Soviet architects and planners, such as Iaskovich and Sokolov, influenced Hanoi and were in turn influenced themselves by their experience in Vietnam.
