The Long Bien Picture Show Lives!
On 11 Dec 2010, the Long Bien Picture Show,
featuring the work of four photographers and four filmmakers, was exhibited outdoors not far from the bridge itself, in a one-night exhibition. All participating artists were asked simply to respond to what they saw in the neighborhood of the Long Bien Bridge and to present it in any way they wished.
And the show lives on, on the web and recently featured in an academic journal about photography in Asia.
From Jamie Maxtone-Graham:
I’m pleased to announce that a body of work I curated and produced at the end of last year in Vietnam called The Long Bien Picture Show has just been presented in Issue #2 of the Trans Asia Photography Review. It appears in the Curatorial Projects section.
Here is a more direct link to the essay.
This is a relatively new, academic journal covering issues and ideas in the history of photography in Asia, both older and more contemporary. I hope you’ll take some time and explore some of the essays and reviews here. Many thanks.
and this from Jamie previously:
At the end of 2010, I produced and curated a large project … which culminated in a one night, outdoor, projected exhibition within the Long Bien neighborhood where all the various portfolios and films were made. I called it The Long Bien Picture Show with the obvious reference to a Saturday matinee or the drive-in movie experience.
Now all the films and the photographs (in their slide show format) have been collected together in one place online.
There’s too much work to be looked at in a single viewing, but bookmark the site and return when you have time.
Here is a short clip of the original outdoor screening:
