KVT – Cock a Doodle Do

The exhibition hall at Goethe is full of poultry.

One of my favorite sculpture artists, Dinh Cong Dat, has made loads of life-size hens and roosters and installed them in a totally white rectangular cube (how’s that for a chickymoron?). It’s really, really good. It started on Saturday and finishes Tuesday and team Dat are on hand making more of the fowl creatures out of papier mache over wire frames….so it’s an interactive exhibition of chooks that’s being added to all the time…and very kid friendly.

Most of the brood scavenge around the floor. Some roost on perches and a few take vantage points higher up the wall. And the best thing about it all is that you can wander around the collection of plump birds and not have to worry about getting chook poo between your toes….but you can almost hear the clucks and doodle doos.

The preening roosters have a final paper covering that feature smiling female faces from colorful magazines. These boys are real cocks of the walk. Their henny-penny counterparts are mainly coated in black and white newsprint and are dutifully pecking around in little groups watched over by their beautiful, strutting masters. For a sample of a few great chookies go to his website and pick your favorites from that pecking order.

Any readable print (or photographs) is from foreign language print sources….perhaps so that local sensibilities are not offended!

Not to be missed. And if you fall in love with a chook or two (as I have) then I think that they’ll be on sale at Art Vietnam later this week.

Dinh Cong Dat is part of the Art Vietnam stable (and, no, I’m not talking about any equine collection) and it’s a good place to go to and see other examples of his fine work. I’ve already got a few of his ants crawling over a wall and would love a collection of school kids. His masks are internationally famous. Anyway, click here for a few samples of his sculptural output.
