Dekotora Yoisaa: A collaborative art project between Sue Hajdu and the Hachinohe community
Exhibition: 02 – 30 Oct 2011
Hachinohe Portal Museum Hacchi, Japan

From Sue Hajdu:
Sue has lived in HCMC for many years and is based there and in Japan. She is the founder of a little blah blah. And this is information about her most recent project in Japan, DEKOTORA YOISAA!

Visit a live studio and see how an artist works or roll up your shirtsleeves and join in the fun of this community-based project. Sue Hajdu, artist in residence at hacchi, will be busily sewing and crafting two dekotora in her studio, which is open to visitors right in the heart of downtown Hachinohe. It’s a relaxed environment where you can chip-in, chill-out, or enjoy various events. At the end of the month, become a dekotora dancer or catch the performances around town!

WHAT IS THIS DEKOTORA THING?
Dekotora (decorated trucks) are said to have originated in Hachinohe in the 1970s. Loaded with seafood fresh off the boats, truckers would speed their bounty to markets around the country, as depicted in the well-known series of movies, Torakku Yaro. The pride and personal expression of their owners, dekotora can be anything from modestly decked-out trucks to a gaudy and sometimes sinister spectacle of traditional and contemporary graphics, flashing LEDs and glittering chrome.
