From Goethe Institut:
The Goethe-Institut Hanoi is pleased to invite you to the photo exhibition by Sibylle Bergemann. The opening will take place on Tuesday, 11 October at 6 pm in the exhibition hall of the Goethe-Institut Hanoi and will be on display until Saturday, 12 November 2011.
Sibylle Bergemann, who died in November last year, was one of the most important and progressive photographers of the GDR. Her timeless portraits and fashion photographs for the magazine “Sibyl” created style icons for an entire generation.
Süddeutsche Zeitung said that:
“The great photographer Sibylle Bergemann staged poetic irony beyond the East German censorship.”
Next to the fashion in her photos she was also able to critically reflect the social developments of her time. Many of her photos have made history. Such as the picture of the two Graces, posing in beach chairs with mouths turned down and thus setting a counterpoint to the feminine ideal in the GDR. With her photos, Sibylle Bergemann documented the desire for freedom and the creative potential that could develop in spite of political restrictions, for example in the field of fashion.
Her portrait photos also show that Sibylle Bergemann was a sensitive observer. Whether rock star Nina Hagen with her mother, or the series of mentally disabled actors, the people in her photographs are presented with dignity and authenticity and always meet the highest aesthetic standards.
Sibylle Bergemann created and documented a piece of German history, and to this day her work has not lost its relevance and is valued internationally. Be there when these excellent photographic exhibition opens at the Goethe-Institut next Tuesday.
