From Embassy of Austria:
On the occasion of 200th birthday of composer and pianist Franz/Ferenc Liszt, and the 125th year since his death (1811-1886), the Austrian and Hungarian Embassies organize jointly the Franz Liszt Piano Concert and Exhibition. Maestro Martyn van den Hoek will give a Liszt Piano Concert at the Vietnam Cultural Space concert hall in Hanoi, and hold the first ever specialized Liszt master class for the piano students of the Vietnam National Academy of Music.

About pianist Martyn

Martyn van den Hoek began his musical studies at the Rotterdam conservatory, completed them in Moscow, Budapest and New York and afterwards settled in Austria. Since 1998, he has been teaching at the Vienna Civic Conservatory.

Martyn van den Hoek was the winner of the First Prize at the First International Franz Liszt Competition held in Utrecht/Netherlands in 1986. It is fascinating to realize that Martyn van den Hoek is historically only “two handshakes away” from Franz Liszt! In New York, Martyn studied with piano teacher Josef Raieff (1906 – 2002). Josef Raieff was a late student of the Russian-born pianist and Alexander Siloti (1863 – 1945), who himself had been one of the favourite students of Franz Liszt in Weimar, Germany.

Martyn’s concert on 4 November will reflect some of the incredibly wide range of Liszt’s compositions: Etudes Transcendentales, Sonata quasi Fantasia, Etudes from Paganini, Hungarian Rhapsody…..

At the occasion of the Liszt piano concert on 4 November, the Hungarian Embassy headed by Ambassador László Vizi will organize an exhibition on the composer.

Hungary and Austria equally regard Liszt as a central figure of their cultural heritage. Liszt is an essential connection between the two countries even today, 200 years after he was born.
