Project Black is showing “Clash” the fifth of its series on Wednesday 29th. This time we feature Chu Viet Cuong, a young artist who lived a street thug life style in the country. Frustrated with problems such as gambling, drinking and drug dealing, the contact with the traditional art craft of lacquer helped him to turn over a new leaf in life.

He started from his rustic origin and constructed series of realistic country scenery lacquer painting. However, living under this transforming historical period inVietnam, the traditional way of life and the newly imported foreign culture are constantly influencing conflict and attempts to resolve conflict in imperceptible ways. The implication between his old thug like habits and his passion of art and new lifestyle, he soon figures that his own life was no exception from the conflict. In his new series of works, he painted women with traditional costumes but composing erotic, sexual and even outraging gestures as if to mark this awkward phase of modernity inVietnamand within himself.

Opening the show we have “Art FaceVietnam” an action art perform by Nguyen Xuan Hoang.
