The nude behind the window by renowned artist Nguyen Than are eye catchingly voyeuristic but it appears that my sensibilities on that viewing day weren’t with wisdom and age and the lady behind sparkly window frames left me a little wilted.

The abstracts by Vu Hoa appealed to me. Apparently the artist lives in France and the canvasses have a very European feel to them. I always find it difficult to walk past good lyrical expressionistic works and Hoa’s canvasses kept pulling me back to have second and third looks…but that’s me all over. When I was at art school I always pushed my paint over the canvas attempting to emulate my abstact exppression heroes but always ended up with geometric hard edge stuff.

Luu Thanh Tuyen has two interesting little kid/doll figurative works on show. They seem to be making pertinent societal statements which I’ll desist from interpreting until after his solo exhibition at the Viet Arts Center….coming soon and co-ordinated again by Ms Tam.

Now we come to my favorite works in the show. Wood cut printer, Ngo Van Sac has two, large, five panel beauties. Called ‘Night’, the long, skinny canvasses are home to a salamander like creature that stalks the works and reminds you of dreams, nightmares, walks by the lake on balmy midnights….. The pastel colors on the horizontal prints are just about too nice!

Another print is nearbye and is representative of his earlier work.

Lets hope that the curator keeps her exhibitions rolling along! There’s a great dearth of oportunities for artists to show their work in the city.
