A Talk with Peggy Orenstein
Wed 11 Apr 2012, 6 – 7.30 pm
UNIS Hanoi Centre for the Arts
From UNIS:
“From Princesses to Pop-Tarts: What the New Culture of Girlhood Means for Girls and the Grown-Ups Who Care About Them”.
This open evening event hopes to bring together “grown-ups who care for girls” from across the Hanoi community for what promises to be an exploration of new perspectives on parenting and is part of a three-day programme for UNIS Hanoi students, faculty and parents.
Peggy Orenstein has spent nearly two decades reporting on issues of womanhood, girlhood, and female empowerment. When her own daughter was born she realised that trying to raise a girl in our post-Feminist age is more than a little perplexing. As a new mother, she was blindsided by the persistent ultra-feminine messages being sent to a new generation of little girls—from “princess-mania” and endless permutations of pink to Bratz dolls and Halloween costumes to how girls were portraying themselves on Facebook. Her most recent book, Cinderella Ate My Daughter (published in 2011) captures her own experiences as a parent and looks at how society communicates with girls.
