The Hanoi Cinematheque will host the first Latin American Film Festival starting on May 15th, 2012, aimed at showcasing and promoting Latin American filmmakers; celebrating the richness and diversity of Latin American cultures and experiences as well as fostering cross-cultural understanding and dialogue with Vietnamese audience.

The Embassies of Argentina, Brazil, Cuba, Chile, Mexico, Panama, Uruguay and Venezuela in Vietnam have worked together on this project to provide a space in Hanoi for Latin American images, sounds and stories, featuring films that portray the complexities and rhythms of everyday life in each country.

Two films will be presented every Tuesday from May 15th to June 5th, 2012, at 18:00 and 20:00 hrs. respectively. Each evening’s program will include a reception between both movies; attendants will enjoy traditional Latin American appetizers and drinks.

The festival opens on Tuesday, May 15, 2012 with “The Student” a film by Mexican director Roberto Girault, presenting a story in Guanajuato, Mexico about a man in his seventies who enrolls at a university to follow his long-deferred dream of studying literature. On the same evening, “Live Cuba” by Cuban director Juan Carlos Cremata will drive the audience into a tale similar to Romeo and Juliet, where the friendship between two children is threatened by their parents’ differences.

On Tuesday, May 22, 2012 “Noel: The Samba Poet” by Brazilian Ricardo Van Steen, will reveal the story of Noel Rosa, one of the best poets and composers whose first big success was a parody of the Brazilian national anthem. Chile will follow with the presentation of “The Gift”, a co-production by Cristián Galaz and Andrea Ugalde, a romantic comedy which mixes funny scenes with charming characters, in a journey that will be an unforgettable experience for a recently widowed and retired man who is going through difficult times.

The series continues on Tuesday, May 29, 2012 with “The Pope’s Toilet”, by Uruguayan César Charlone, a story inspired by a real-life 1988 tour of Pope John Paul II through South America, including a stop in Melo, Uruguay. On the same night, war and espionage will set the stage for a star-crossed romance in “Venezzia”, a historical drama from Venezuelan director Haik Gazarian.

“The Chance” on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 is a fun tropical comedy directed by Panamanian Abner Benaim, about employee-employer labor relations which lays a very funny subtle critique about the mistreatment that the domestic service suffers most of the time. The series concludes with the Argentinean “A Chinese Tale”, by Sebastian Borensztein, a movie about magic in life, rare events and destiny. A story of a Chinese immigrant lost inBuenos Aires, without knowing any Spanish at all. The rendez-vous between two cultures will come to show us the underlying connection of seemingly isolated events.

The Film Festival is open to the public and the entrance is free, except for May 15th, 2012; this date will be reserved for guests with invitations.

All films will be shown in Spanish with English subtitles and Vietnamese audio option. Please kindly bring your ID card to borrow headsets if necessary.
