Christiane Baumgartner, born 1967, studied from 1988 to 1994 at the School of Visual Arts in Leipzig and from 1997 to 1999 at the Royal College of Art, London. Her main artistic medium is printmaking. Particularly well known are her woodcuts. For these she usually works from her own video recordings, producing stills in the form of woodcuts, often in very large formats. Christiane Baumgartner is internationally known and has been honored with awards, her works are in museums in Leipzig, Vienna, London, New York, Amsterdam.
Following the invitation of the Goethe-Institut, Baumgartner will perform a workshop for several days at the Academies of Fine Arts in HCMC, Hue and Hanoi. Theme is the combination of traditional printing techniques with digital media. At the end the work of the participants will be presented in an exhibition. Additional Baumgartner gives a talk to the students about the development of her creative work, from Video and serial digital photography to woodcuts after digital submittals. Her preferred pictorial themes are visual perception, speed and associated motives like planes and freeways.
Dr. Richard van Tol, is a design researcher at the Utracht School of the Arts, faculty of Arts, Media and Technology, where he focuses on the design of play in a wide range of fields and disciplines. He teaches courses in game audio design and pursued as doctorate on this topic. In 2011 Richard was responsible for the first iteration of the Cultures at Play Game Jam, an intercultural multidisciplinary game jam with both Turkish and Dutch students in Istanbul (Turkey). He researched the accessibility of games for gamers with disabilities at the Bartiméus Accessibility Foundation (Netherlands). 2001 he developed together with Dr. Sander Huiberts “Drive”, a racing game for the blind.
Dr. Sander Huiberts, is music designer and researcher. He received a PhD degree from the University of Portsmouth in the UK for investigating the role of audio for immersion in games and currently studies at the Utracht School of the Arts the design of adaptive music systems. He teaches in game audio design, adaptive game music and audio interfacing to game development. In 2008 he published a framework IEZA for the conceptualization of game audio, which is used at the Utrecht School of the Arts as well as other universities around the world. His research interests now include the development of systems that provide sound and music for non-linear contexts as well as the design processes.
The design researchers Dr. Richard van Tol and Dr. Sander Huiberts will organize a “Game Jam”. The goal is to come together and make a video game and music for this game, or non-digital game like a board game or card game. The brief time span is meant to help encourage creative thinking to result in small but innovative and experimental games. Although having computer skills is helpful, code experience is not necessary. The new games will be presented in the end of the workshop-week and all students are invites to participate.
