Screening of “Crossroads: Between Vietnam and Mongolia”

You are invited to the screening of Perrine Le Roy’s Crossroads: Between Vietnam and Mongolia. Crossroads is a silent exploration of the daily life of both countries: from emptiness to crowds, family relationships and the everyday expressions of religion to attitudes to work. Rather than being a comparison between cultures, the film instead represents a melting pot; from a Vietnamese cyclo-driver to a Mongolian shaman’s spirit ritual, Perrine’s film brings cultures closer together.

The film will be accompanied by a live score from three talented Vietnamese musicians.

Nguyen Quynh Chi won second prize at the international Accordion Competition in Reinach, Switzerland, which means she can play a bit. In Hanoi, she can often be found playing at L’Espace’s musettes and cafés around the capital.

Vocals will be provided by Dinh Lan, singer with French-Vietnamese band, Puzzle. She’s a regular at L’Espace’s montly Cabaret event singing a selection of Vietnamese, French and Spanish songs.

Completing the line-up is Nguyen Thuy Dung. Dung has started to make a name for herself through her genre-defying collaborations. Whether playing with African musicians, creating free-form experimental improvisations or filling floors alongside international DJs, Dung is constantly pushing the boundaries of what the traditional Dan Tranh can do.

The event will also feature a screening of Hanoi DocLab’s cult documentary, Hard Rails across a Gentle River. Through the observances of four filmmakers, a mosaic of Long Bien life unfolds. Whether exploring communities of nudist bathers on Long Bien Island, female workers on city intersections or security guards patrolling the iconic bridge’s ancient rails, the film presents Long Bien as you’ve never seen it before. The end result is a gently unfolding documentary mosaic of difficult living, compassion and direct observations of life and culture in contemporary urban Vietnam.
