From Japan Foundation:
A young Japanese dancer of great promise brings her masterpiece to add unique value to Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2013.
In celebration of the Japan – Vietnam Friendship Year 2013, the Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents a short contemporary dance piece “Alphard” by Mikiko Kawamura, on Thursday 26 & Friday 27 September 2013, as a part of Europe Meets Asia in Contemporary Dance 2013 in Hanoi.
After winning the Outstanding New Artist Prize at Yokohama Dance Collection EX2011, Mikiko Kawamura has made a clean sweep of the New Artist Prizes in Japan such as the “Dance ga Mitai! New Figure Dance Festival 10” (2011), HARAJUKU PERFORMANCE+ DOMMUNE Award (2012), and Japan Dance Forum (JaDaFo) Award (2013) to name but a few.
Alphard, which is first premiered in Yokohama, Japan in February 2012, is made with Kawamura’s inspiration from the same name’s lonely bright star, standing alone in the position of the snake’s heart in the constellation Hydra. With lighting installations, the young choreographer (and herself is the dancer) divides the stage into nine squares, each with a different musical theme. It is like “stepping on the perceptions”, according to Kawamura’s statement.
Alphard shows the true worth of Kawamura’s excellent physical ability as well as her talent of choreography. This delicate but powerful dance piece will surely inspire you, Vietnamese audience in particular, to think about “contemporariness” in dance in Asian context including Japan.
Alphard by Mikiko Kawamura, a 25-minitue dance piece will be shown on Thursday 26 & Friday 27 September at Youth Theatre (11 Ngo Thi Nham) in Hanoi.
