Following Oscar film month, on the occasion of Women’s Day 8 Mar, you are invited to the screening of 2 films directed by leading female directors in Hollywood nowadays: Sofia Coppola with Lost in Translation and Lisa Cholodenko with The Kids Are All Right this weekend at TPD

Original language with Vietnamese subtitles. The screening is for educational purpose and supportive to TPD Centre’s Young Cinema Fund.

Lost in Translation (101 minutes)

LOST IN TRANSLATION is a 2003 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Sofia Coppola. It was her second feature film after The Virgin Suicides (1999). It stars Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi, Anna Faris, and Fumihiro Hayashi.

The film revolves around an aging actor named Bob Harris (Murray) and a recent college graduate named Charlotte (Johansson) who develop a rapport after a chance meeting in a Tokyo hotel. The movie explores themes of loneliness, insomnia, existential ennui, and culture shock against the backdrop of a modern Japanese city.

LOST IN TRANSLATION was a major critical success and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Bill Murray, and Best Director for Sofia Coppola; Coppola won for Best Original Screenplay. Scarlett Johansson won a BAFTA award for Best Actress in a Leading Role. The film was also a commercial success, grossing almost $120 million from a budget of only $4 million.

The Kids Are All Right (106 minutes)

THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT is the heartfelt new comedy from acclaimed director Lisa Cholodenko, starring Annette Bening, Julianne Moore, and Mark Ruffalo.

Two teenaged children (Alice in Wonderlands Mia Wasikowska and Journey to the Center of the Earths Josh Hutcherson) get the notion to seek out their biological father and introduce him into the family life that their two mothers (Bening and Moore) have built for them. Once the donor (Ruffalo) is found, the household will never be the same, as family ties are defined, re-defined, and re-re-defined.

The New York Times raves that its “a generous, nearly note-perfect portrait of a modern family,” and Entertainment Weekly calls the movie “funny, smart and sexy!”

The film was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, and Annette Bening was awarded the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy. The film also received four Academy Award nominations, including one for Best Picture, at the 83rd Academy Awards.
