To prepare for the upcoming Animation Workshop of Hanoi Doclab, we’re please to invite you to the Experimental Animation Screening 40s – 80s. After the screening there will have a Q&A and a presentation of the workshop with the main instructors : animation filmmaker Alex Cao and two french animation directors Francois and Stephanie.

During the period from 40 to 80 years of the 20th century, despite of the expansion of Walt Disney widespread entertainment industry, there is an independent animation self-existence in the underground circuit, where artists come with their fantasies, the default satisfying personal and emotional detachment to the real world. In which the artist has emerged from epic inspiration, or fairy mythology – which is quite prevalent in earlier and in modern animation.

4 artists introduced in this film screenings, with 4 art style, and 4 different techniques to show the diversity of modern minimalist and trendy inspiration.

Karel Zeman, with his “Inspiration” – 1949 represents the stop motion style can retrieve objects from glass, he represented Eastern European animation, affected by the fluctuations of the WWII.

Harry Smith, American animator/film maker with a distinctive style drawing directly on each plate 35mm and 18mm film and slide it in the form of animation. It is expressed through his “Weave” – 1949.

Zbigniew Rybczynski with “Tango” – 1980 represents for Rotoscoping technique combine the live-action footages and the static context, creating a small video installation in large layout of a complete animation.

Lawrence Jordan – the “cutout” animator performs his works meticulously assembled through the layer of contexts, characters from separate fragments and makes them move between the flat spaces. A work such as “Carabosse” – 1980.
