HẦM HÀNH – OPENING RECEPTION

With live DJ sets from:

MARK GERGIS (DJ)
SYLVAIN STREIFF (live)
ALEX TASSEL (vinyls)

After nearly 2½ years of putting on uncompromising events in Hanoi and HCM City and receiving an abundance of questions of the likes of ‘What is The Onion Cellar? Where do I go to find you?’.. (1)

We are super excited to say: The Onion Cellar can finally be found in this dimension of time and space.

Located at #170 Đội Cấn, HẦM HÀNH (2) (ask any member of staff for pronunciation) is a bit of a special café.

We have different distinctive settings that will enable you to, amongst many other things, socialise over a Tom Waits-inspired cocktail, take a nap drifting in and out to the sounds of field recordings, or chill in our pleasant fountained garden at the height of summer.

Maybe even more importantly, this will be a place for you to share and discover and learn from each other.

Continuing on from our unexpectedly successful mixtape-trading experiment last year (3), we will be hosting something similar at HẦM HÀNH. More details on this (and other cool sh*t (4)) to follow.

So. For HẦM HÀNH’s inaugural congregation we have invited 3 very special friends of The Onion Cellar to entertain (and possibly enlighten) you:

– MARK GERGIS (Sublime Frequencies collaborator and the man behind the Porest moniker and the excellent Sham Palace label) who will do a DJ set built around obscure folk/pop music from unusual locations of the non-Western world.

– French Hanoi-based guitarist / đàn-bầu-explorer SYLVAIN STREIFF with a jazz-influenced late-night-vibe live set.

– And our friend (and dare we say long-time Onion Cellar fan? :D) ALEX TASSEL who will play vinyls throughout the evening (an opening party likely to feature the music of Sunn O))) – we say YES).

COME CELEBRATE WITH US!!

NOTES:

(1) – We will still be holding events at other venues in Hanoi, and The Onion Cellar (as an event organiser) will be back this summer.

(2) – HẦM HÀNH: Vietnamese translation for ‘The Onion Cellar’ – shout out to Duong Tuong.

(3) – From Sad and Beautiful World festival: http://on.fb.me/1isYKLj

(4) – We bet this is the only cafe in Hanoi where you’ll find a book by David Lynch talking about meditation..
