LAST LIFE IN THE UNIVERSE (2003)
112′ / Dir – Pen-Ek Ratanaruang
English, Japanese and Thai, with English subtitles
“Kenji is a young, quiet, reserved and suicidal librarian at the Japan Foundation in Bangkok who is constantly planning and imagining ways of ending his own life.
In contrast is Noi, a young Thai prostitute who lives in a house that couldn’t possibly be any messier.
The two meet through an unfortunate circumstance, and both their lives will be changed forever.”
“A quietly funny and unsettling love story about people lost (and found) in the margins of one another’s identities – national, cultural and individual.
“The film centers around life and death, and the strange way fate has of bringing people together just as their worlds seem on the verge of falling apart.”
“The cinematography by Christopher Doyle recalls the muted, dreamy look of Wong Kar-Wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’ in which Mr. Doyle’s photography evoked a similar sense of suspension somewhere out of time. ”
