Documentary Scriptwriting Residency Hanoi-Vietnam

Documentary Scriptwriting Residency Hanoi: Call for applications
Deadline: 15 Sep 2015

From DOCLAB:

6 Vietnamese film authors/makers will be hosted in a writing residency for a two weeks workshop, aiming to:
– Carry out a diagnostic and detailed critical analysis of their projects;
– Develop an actual documentary script for their project;
– And finally, carry out exercises in rough video sketches.

The residency will take place in Hanoi, Vietnam, at the Goethe Institute, from October 18th to 29th 2015*. One trainer from France – a writer and director himself – will mentor the programme.

(*)Please note that the dates may change and will be confirmed at least one month in advance.

PROGRAM
A collective study group coordinated by the trainer for each of the projects will include:
– In-depth analysis of questions of “subject” and form; collective viewing of any of the trainees’ earlier productions as well as films from the documentary film heritage;
– Individual research work: screening and interpretation of films related to the project’s formal themes and issues;
– Individual tutorials with the tutor: analysis, preparing to scout for locations if relevant, examining the different possible options before location scouting;
– First stage of rewriting the project;
– Collective and individual analysis of reworked projects after research and location scouting;
– Final draft of the project, in constant coordination with the trainer.

PROJECTS
*Projects, which will be considered for selection, are “creative documentaries”.
– “Creative Documentaries”: any work dealing with reality, past or present, which has been the subject of research, analysis and writing, and which expresses the originality of the writer-directors’ perspective.
– The course is designed to develop projects (writing, location scouting, research, production strategy, etc.).

PARTICIPANTS
– The course is designed for any film writer-maker from Vietnam (min. 19 years old);
– Qualification is not required but at least some experiences in filmmaking (professional or non-professional), in link with the image (broadcasting, photography, visual arts…) or writing (theatre, literature…) would be preferable. The trainer will adapt to the development stage of the project and the experience of the participants to provide them with the relevant level of assistance they need to strengthen their projects. Beginners and experienced filmmakers can apply.
