You are invited to the Richard Strauss Concert: Don Quixote (subscription concert Vol. 85) with:
– Conductor: Honna Tetsuji
– Soprano: Ha Pham Thang Long
– Cello Soloist: Maximilian Hornung
– Viola Soloist: Nguyen Nguyet Thu
and the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra
In 1987 Richard Strauss was fascinated by heroes. Next to his symphonic poem Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life), he composed Don Quixote – Fantastic Variations on a Theme of Knightly Character, op.35 for violoncello and viola.
As sequel of the Richard Strauss cycle this important musical work will be performed by the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra with the collaboration of Goethe-Institut Hanoi. Maximilian Hornung (Bayrischer Rundfunk Symphony orchestra) will be playing the solo cello. He embodies in an instrumental way the self-titled knight Don Quixote, who lives in his own dream world. The farmer Sancho Panza in contrast will be represented by a viola played by Nguyen Nguyet Thu.
The evening will be opened by Four last songs, a piece about death and farewell. These were the topics Richard Strauss dealt with in 1948 when he had reached old age, also coming to terms with his experiences in World War II. The underlying poems by Hermann Hesse and Joseph von Eichendorff will be performed by soprano singer Ha Pham Thang Long and cellist Maximilian Hornung.
It’s the premiere of both pieces in Vietnam, so they are considered as a special event within the Richard Strauss cycle. For his performance of Don Quixote Maximilian Hornung was already highly praised at the Salzburger Festspiele.

Maximilian Hornung, raised in a musician’s family, started to play cello by the age of eight. When he was 22 he successfully applied for the position of the first solo cellist at the Bayrischer Rundfunk symphony orchestra. Since then Hornung has been known as a so called Frühvollendeter (a young artist who’s genius reached his climax early). He plays as a soloist in various musical institutions, like Czech philharmonic orchestra, Vienna symphony orchestra or the Tonhallen Orchestra Zurich. His chamber music partners are the well-known Anne-Sophie Mutter, Lisa Batiashvili, François Leleux and Igor Levit. In 2011 and in 2012 he won the Echo-Klassik “best young artist” and best concert recording of the year. The live-recording of Don Quixote is the latest release of Maximillian Hornung.
