Already before the official start of the festival, the audience will be warmed up with a Documentary Script Writing workshop with the French filmmaker Jacques Deschamps.
The festival kicks off on Friday evening, 30.10.2015, with a selection of short films produced during the DocLab Workshop “Neighbourhood”. This new productions reflect the filmmakers’ perspectives on their homes, their neighbourhoods and the people close to them.
The second festival day starts with the screening of South Korean filmmaker Kim So Young’s documentary “Heart of Snow, Heart of Blood”. The movie deals with the 150 years of history of the Russian-speaking Korean minorities (Koryo), their tragic deportation to Central Asia and their being in today’s world as shaped by migration and resettlement.
On Saturday noon, an artist talk on the genre Found Footage featuring Hanoi-based Truong Que Chi takes place and DocLab introduces a selection of films from Basic Workshop 2014.
On the second day’s evening, curator Wiwat Lertwiwatwongsa and director Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke presents the Thai programme “Filmvirus Wildtype – A brief history of the age of anxiety” in two parts. The included movies focus on the repetitive pattern of events in the difficult and changing history of Thailand’s politics. A mix of past and future, dream and reality – in an age of anxiety.
The last day of the festival starts with a presentation of the Vietnamese documentary project “Zone 9” and an online discussion together with director Nguyen Anh Thu. Her project, which was financed with crowdfunding, shows construction and demise of Zone 9, an Hanoi artist zone which developed in an old factory building.
At noon, Doclab will introduce a series of films which were born in the Haiku Happens workshop last year. After the screening will be a talk with director Pham Thi Hao about Haiku films, which are inspired by the art of Japanese Haiku-poetry: make a movie out of three moving images.
In the afternoon, German filmmaker and video artist Michael Brynntrup will present his own experimental short films under the title of “Portrait Michael Brynntrup”. Brynntrup’s films go beyond conventions of movies and universal habits of watching them. As one of the most productive German filmmakers active in the underground scene, this is an insider’s tip for everybody interested in filmmaking. The screening is followed by an artist talk, followed by a selection of works of Brynntrup’s students from the Braunschweig University of Art.
Sunday will be concluded with the movie “The trip to hometown with my parents” and a discussion with the director Duong Mong Thu. Her film deals with the life story of her father and the fulfillment of his last wish.
On Monday, the Mini DocFest 2015 ends with the Mini-Workshop “Jesus – A collective film project” by Michael Brynntrup, where filmmakers will discuss about possibilities and chances of collaboration, on the basis of the collective film project “Jesus – The Film”, and share ideas.
The festival’s program offers audience discussions, film screenings, artist talks, and also plenty of opportunities to connect and talk with those who share interests in films.
