A journey into Lomographic photography

OK! OK! I know that taking photos of photos is a bit stupid so if you want to see Maika’s excellent prints in all their gorgeousness you’ll have to trot along to Goethe before Jan 28

International photographic prize winner Maika Elan has been Lomographing since 2009 with nice results indeed as her lomography diary indicates. Which means she’s an aficionado of those sort of lovely fresh images sort of invented by the Lomographic Society that’s based in Austria and was formed in 1992 by students who first experimented with a toy, affordable camera, the Loma LCA made in St Petersburg, Russia. The resulting art movement developed into a commercial enterprise and since 1995 Lomography has moved into producing their own range of analog cameras, films and accessories

Apparently the whole joy of being a Loma user is the unpredictability of the end result… which, I think has a lot to do with the plastic lenses used… and it’s those end results that confuse us amateur owners of digital camera who will think that Photoshop has been employed… which is impossible of course.

Maika is a Loma expert and does all sorts of luscious thing like using analog film twice to get a double exposure (I think that’s what it is… but as I’m one of those digital amateurs and a dummy one at that, I’ll leave it all there in case I get tied up in too many knots and can’t do a Houdini)

Her exhibition is called NO TO SORROW and I’ll let you analyze why

Here’s a bit from the PR blurb that explains it all perfectly: ‘Maika Elan’s pictures play around with colors, shades, focus and perspective. They show both the trivial and exceptional scenes from the photographer’s life, and always reflect her optimism and happiness. On display will be a range of different photographs, from the areas of portrait, fashion and documentary photography.’
