From L’Espace:

You are invited to the conference “Press Correspondent in Hanoi in 80s” with the participation of Michel Blanchard, former director of the AFP office in Vietnam (1981-1983), as part of his photo exhibition “Vietnam in the 80s”.

The daily life in the 80s in Hanoi of an AFP correspondent, the only permanent foreign press correspondent in Vietnam, outside the press of socialist and communist parties bodies.

The AFP, through the end of the American war in Vietnam, had offices in Hanoi and Saigon. After the war, Hanoi office was allowed to keep its activities and become the only permanent office of the non-socialist foreign press. The director of this office, from France and supported by at least one Vietnamese journalist and interpreter, was also responsible for the coverage of Cambodia and Laos.

The 80s, between Reunification and the introduction of Doi moi, is a pivotal time for Vietnam. The AFP correspondent whose dispatches were read and translated to the world, had a heavy and exciting task to inform the best of all aspects of the national life. Michel Blanchard, who was director of the AFP office in Hanoi from June 1981 to June 1983, will testify with his hindsight, experience, work, and daily life, through his exhibition of 50 photos conducted personally. This experience marked the beginning of a long relationship with Vietnam through his writing and photos. A relationship that lasts forever until today via many cultural links.
