From Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam:
The Japan Foundation Center for Cultural Exchange in Vietnam proudly presents its eighth act of the JF Garage Concert, “Sound and Dance of Locals” performed by Kawashima-bayashi in Hanoi on Sunday 15.05.2016.
“Kawashima-bayashi” is a traditional dance music which has been performed through generation to generation among the people in Kawashima district in Hodogaya-ku, Yokohama City for more 200 years since the beginning of the 18th century. In 1980, it became the first designated intangible cultural asset of the city.
The origin of Kawashima-bayashi is thought to be the annual festivals performed by farmers to thank the nature spirits for good harvest. Nowadays, they have important role not only in the seasonal festival (like summer festival, New Year’s festival) or feast.
They play drums, gong and bamboo flute, accompanied by dancers wearing traditional masks and costumes. Their comical performances are popular among the locals these days as an essential to celebrations.
Taking this opportunity, we hope you will enjoy Japanese traditional sound and dance, which have been passed from generation to generation for more than 200 years, and feel the spirit of the local people.
