Concert “A German Requiem”

Goethe-Institut Hanoi welcomes the Gewandhaus Choir Leipzig for several concerts in Vietnam. On October 13, 2016 the traditional choir will perform “Ein Deutsches Requiem” (A German Requiem) together with the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra (VNSO), directed by Tetsuji Honna.

The idea of this Requiem has kept Brahms (1833-1897) busy for over a decade. In 1856, his friend and supporter Robert Schumann passed away, ten years later he had to cope with the loss of his mother. What is exceptional about this requiem is, that Brahms did not use the common Latin mass texts but selected specific parts of the bible himself which deal with mortality of mankind and such which evolve around the hope for a life after death, which is supposed to comfort the surviving dependants.

Gewandhaus Choir Leipzig has been one of the most renowned German concert choirs for over 150 years and is closely linked to the traditional Gewandhaus orchestra. The Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1959 and performs about 60 concerts each year in Vietnam and other South East Asian countries.

SOLOISTS

Steven Klose Steven Klose, bass-baritone, received musical impulses from an early stage on at the Kreuz choir Dresden. In 2008, he started vocal studies at the conservatory in Leipzig and was taught by Prof. Roland Schubert. Soon, Klose got active within the frame of choir and ensemble work as well as with solos. Due to travelling and singing with professional choirs, directed by e.g. Sir Simon Rattle, Howard Arman, Riccardo Chailly and Helmuth Rilling, Klose is able to sing a huge repertoire, ranging from old to contemporary music.

Ha Pham Thang Long is a famous soprano opera singer from Vietnam. She studied singing at the National Academy of Music in Vietnam. Currently she is a vocal teacher at the University of Military Culture and Arts and has taken many roles in performances by the National Opera and Ballet. She regularly participates as a solo artist in the Vietnam Symphony Orchestra. Her performing experiences vary, including work by Handel, Mozart and Haydn.
