Artist Talk: B to A: from Book to Art by Saghi Parkhideh
Thu 20 Oct 2016, 8 pm
Six Space
From the organizer:
It is hard to define what exactly an artist book is. There have been many debates over the true definition of an artist book during past 2-3 decades and still the term ‘Artist book’ stays complicated to be explained. An artist book is a medium that allows an artist’s work to be accessible to a multitude of people in different locations at any given time. Unlike an art book, catalog or monograph that tend to showcase artworks created in another medium, the term ‘artist book refers to publications that have been conceived as artworks in their own right. While artist book can take many forms, there are a few elements that are common across the practice. Understanding a book as an artwork invites a reflection on the properties of the book form itself. Much like any act of reading, an artists’ book is a physical experience that allows a connection with the medium that – while social in its implications – is individual and personal. While it is famous that Artist book is a revolutionary form of art from the 1970’s it has roots to the 19 century and early 20th century. This talk aimes to present the history of artist book by looking at some of the most significant artists of this medium, focusing on 1970 and continuing the path to the work of contemporary studious of this medium.
