Come to screening of three films on the topic of “families”: New documentaries from TPD student directors and one film by Brenda Mattick.

• “Rito Rito” Dir. Nguyễn Ngọc Thảo Ly
15-year old Rito is a Hanoi cosplay enthusiast. Her friends in the scene make elaborate costumes and makeup to dress as their favorite animé and videogame characters. In character, Rito is transported to another life, escaping from the harsh realities facing an unusual girl.
15 minutes. English subtitles.

• “Those who stayed” (Những Người Ở Lại) Dir. Nguyễn Ngọc Trang
A very personal documentary from a family recovering from the death of the mother. Dad has to take on the role of Mum in the household, while three generations deal with grief, and the question of re-marriage.
16 minutes. English Subtitles

• “Pieces of Memories” (Mẩu Ký Ức) Dir. Nguyễn Thị Thanh Thảo
“Pieces of memories” looks back at the life of a family matriarch, as her descendants care for her in her last days. We hear stories of the strength of Vietnamese women over the 20th century. The family now contend with the tradition of care, and the complexities of inheritance.
12 minutes. English subtitles.

• “Dumpling cake bikes” (Bánh Bao Bikes ) Dir. Brenda Mattick
A short documentary on the love and life of one of Hanoi’s many bicycle mechanics and his love for the old bicycles of Hanoi. It will make you start to look a little more closely at Hanoi’s many bikes.
15 minutes. English subtitles.
