You are invited to attend a special musical night at Heritage Space called “POEMS by ZITHER”, performed by well-known artist Nguyen Thanh Thuy.

The world-famous Đàn Tranh (Zither) player Nguyễn Thanh Thủy is on a tour in autumn that brings her to Europe, USA and Vietnam. Her one recital in Hanoi will take place at the Hanoi Heritage Space on the 11th of December at 20:00. This performance draws on the traditional forms of recitation in Vietnamese music and for this program, she has invited the famous singer Đoàn Thanh Bình, a cultural bearer of the Chèo and Ca Trù traditions, and one of the leading voice in Hanoi of today. The program draws the poetry in music and the music in poetry together in an encounter between traditional and contemporary music.

In addition to traditional music, the program also features three new works composed by Nguyễn Thanh Thủy, the American composer Bill Brooks and the Swedish composer Henrik Frisk. The three new compositions engage with recitation and đàn tranh accompaniment in a manner also reminiscent of the practice of chanting developed by the Irish poet William Butler Yeats.

Nguyễn Thanh Thủy works with both traditional and experimental music as a đàn Tranh (Zither) performer/improvisor; collaborates with many musicians and composers around the world. She has received many distinctions. She has recorded several CD’s as soloist with orchestra and solo CDs: Độc tấu đàn tranh Nguyễn Thanh Thủy Vol.1 (2005.) Tranh Improvisation (with Jakob Riis, laptop, 2010). Suối Tranh Nguyễn Thanh Thủy Vol.2 (2012.) The Six Tones: Signal in Noise (2013.) JACK Quartet // Six Tones play RICHARD KARPEN (2016)…Since 2000 she holds a teaching position at the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Since 2012 she is carrying out an artistic doctoral project at the Malmö Academy of Music in Sweden concerned with gesture in Vietnamese traditional music.
