From the organizer:
On the occasion of International Human Rights Day, 10 December, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands organizes a free screening of the Dutch/Cuban documentary “Transit Havana” (2015). The film is about equal rights issues for transgenders in Cuba.
Film synopsis:
The lives of Cuban transgenders have become considerably easier since Mariela Castro – daughter of current president Raul – is involved in improving the position of sexual minorities. Every year, five transgender people are allowed to have a government-funded sex change operation. In Havana, Odette and Malú are eagerly awaiting their sex change operation. Juani has already had an operation: he was Cuba’s first transgender.
Once per year, two top surgeons specialized in sex change operations – one from the Netherlands and one from Flanders (the Dutch-speaking part of Belgium) – are flown in from Europe to Cuba to perform the operations. But new oppotunities clash with old issues. Poverty, limited employment and intolerance are still commonplace.
Language: Spanish/Dutch/English with English subtitles and Vietnamese audio option
