From L’Espace:

You are invited to the lecture “Hearing Independence: Radio in the Democratic Republic of Vietnam” with speaker Lonán Ó Briain, Assistant Professor of Music at the University of Nottingham.

In the late 1950s, radio broadcasts influenced how the northern Vietnamese experienced their newfound independence from France. Radio professionals used particular voices, sounds, noises and music to creatively shape affiliations with fellow citizens, the state and the Party. Lonán Ó Briain draws on oral histories, archival records and old audio broadcasts to reconstruct the sounds of postcolonial northern Vietnam.

Language : English – Vietnamese
