From the organizer:

Hanoi is changing very fast. This gives us an opportunity to innovate new ways of urban living that take into account culture and traditions, but also make the city accessible to everyone, rich and poor. This public talk brings together different perspectives to discuss how today’s development is affecting people’s lives in different ways.

Schedule

14:00 – Welcome and introduction remarks
14:20 – Presentation of research on food and development in Tay Ho District
15:00 – Panel discussion (20 minutes per speaker)
16:00 – Audience Q & A
17:00 – Networking and exhibition

Speakers:

— Aaron Vansintjan: PhD researcher from the University of London and visiting researcher at CIAT-Asia, with a background in urban geography and food studies. He will present preliminary findings from his research on how real estate price increases have affected the lives of poor residents of Tay Ho District, and why gardening, urban agriculture, and access to public space remain important for them.

— Hoang Thuc Hao: award-winning architect and lecturer at the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering
He will talk about his philosophy “happiness architecture”, as well as his experience in practicing and promoting architecture imbued with identities for marginalized communities.

— Chu Kim Đức: Co-founder of Think Playground! – an organization seeking solutions to build playground for children. After three years, Think Playground! has successfully constructed more than 40 playgrounds for children in Hanoi and other provinces. The group approaches public space as a right entitled to all citizens regardless of their age, class status and physical (dis)ability. Kim Đức will share stories from the group’s activities, successes and challenges they have experienced.

A Q&A session will open up the space for audience members to ask questions and share their ideas about what makes Hanoi a livable city.
