From the organizer:

This is one event in Program of Friends of Vietnam Heritage (FVH) in June 2017.

Come to a screening of the film “Wharf of widows” (Bến Kkông chồng) by Director Lưu Trọng Ninh (main character: Nguyen Van).

The film is based on a well-known novel of the same title by author Duong Huong. It received a prize by the Vietnam Writers’ Association in 1991, and won an award at the Berlin International Film Festival.

“Wharf of widows” reflects stories in the context of a rural Village called Dong – a typical North Vietnamese village with bamboo ramparts, communal house roofs, banyan trees and wharves. It was a time when the north hurried to build up the countryside and support the southern battlefield. The movie takes us back to the olden days of peaceful northern villages and women waiting for their men to return from the battlefield. The war robbed the village of healthy strong men leaving behind the women who waited at the water’s edge.

Severely injured after fighting at Dien Bien Phu, Nguyen Van looks forward returning home to his village feeling very nostalgic. For him, the village was the epitome of the most peaceful place. However, he is faced with the usual stifling family customs and 100 year old village habits and expectations, public opinions, rumors etc..

In the meantime, a beautiful girl, Hanh, enters his life, bringing rare moments of happiness.

The film is regarded as one of the best Vietnamese romantic films.

The film is in black and white, 1 hour and 45 minutes with English subtitles.
