From Goethe Institut:

For the first time in Vietnam a musical-theatre performance by international composers will take place at L’espace.

Together with the Hanoi New Music Ensemble and DomDom, the Goethe-Institut Hanoi presents three music-theatre performances by international composers on June 10th at 8 pm at L’espace.

One of the pieces is “Abschminken” (English title: makeup removal) by Brigitta Muntendorf. It is a play in-between a public and private space: while the music is performed on stage the video shows a scene in the wardrobe behind the stage. The audience don’t know anything about the time relationship between both spaces; they even can’t define the relationship between the virtual and the real performers. The camera acts as a mirror for the virtual singer. The music forms itself and acts inside the challenge between countenance and the loss of control.

Another piece that will be performed is “In gewohnter Umgebung III” (English title: in familiar surroundings III) by Carola Bauckholt. In this piece Carola Bauckholt was inspired by the examination of the seemingly self-evident relationship between visual elements and their acoustic manifestations. In her composition she chooses the medium of film because it is uniquely able to capture the way our familiar surroundings exist in our mind’s eye – with all its fragmentation and abrupt shifts in time and space.

Last but not least the concert includes also a performance of a piece by Kim Ngoc Tran which is called “Ho Nguyet Co Hoa Cao”. Having an ongoing concern with concepts of femininity, Kim Ngoc retell the story of an ancient tale of Tuồng, a Vietnamese opera, in correlation with different layers of time, space and languages of art; between the tones of the ancient Tuồng and the nature of western classical instruments, between film and music, between live performance and recorded performance, between the ancient legend and the fates of people in the present time.

Hanoi New Music Ensemble:

Founded in 2015 by the composers Vu Nhat Tan, Tran Kim Ngoc, violinist Pham Truong Son and American conductor Jeff Von Der Schmidt, the Hanoi New Music Ensemble (HNME) is a new group bringing Vietnamese and international contemporary music to the Vietnamese public. The HNME is already the main ambassador of contemporary Vietnamese music to the international music scene. HNME members include senior musicians of the classical music community in Vietnam.

As a guest of the Goethe-Institut, Manos Tsangaris, a German Composer, drummer and installation artist currently is in Hanoi and will give a lecture on the 6th of June at 10 am in the National Music Academy of Vietnam. He will talk about the role of the music theatre and which meaning it has nowadays. In addition he will present his music-theatre piece “Love & Diversity” with the Hanoi New Music Ensemble and DomDom on June 9 at 8 pm in the Goethe-Institut Hanoi.
