From the organizer:

What is the earliest recording in disc ever, hmm, recorded? Year 1909, Nutcracker Suite, Tchaikovsky, conducted by Herman Finck with London Palace Orchestra. The near 20-minute wonder of music – and the Nutcracker Ballet where it belongs to – has since transcended borders, time and even worlds, as it transports audiences to a magical, captivating world of dreams, every year on Christmas. From the world of classical music, Nutcracker has become an indispensable part of pop culture worldwide, and convincingly so even nowadays. It is impossible to tell how many youngsters have entered the threshold into classical music, and music in general, with Nutcracker.

What truly gives such German Romantic story, composed by a Russian composer, and staged by a French choreographer a universal appeal Nutcracker has? How have the names of Nutcracker, Sugar Plum Fairy, Mouse King, Drosselmeyer and Clara become so similar to almost everyone? Premiered to an uninterested audience a mid December evening (18th), the ballet does not have the presence of any godlike figures or baby Jesus, yet it celebrates the festivities that, regardless religious persuasion or culture, everyone can relate to and embrace dearly. The world in presentation is for children, for the parents, made up of toys, Christmas trees, snowflakes, waltzing flowers, and lots of candies, lots of eye-pleasing choreographies from “exotic” lands, wonderfully backed by the splendid perfection of music by Tchaikovsky. The plot, once remarked as merely scenes connecting to each other, is by itself a great simplicitty, glorifying the “Western Tet” spirit of joy and togetherness.

In its 6th installment since the debut back in 2011 by Johannes Jakhelin Constant, Nutcracker as HBSO’s bestseller keeps reinventing itself to be even better and better-er to perfection. This year, the performances will be joined by children dancers from Sasa Ballet, two Japanese performers Naoki Tomikawa as Cavalier and Yuki Hiroshige as Dewdrop. The background settings also enjoy huge renovations, especially the scenes of Waltz of the Flowers and Divertisement. HBSO promises to deliver this extravaganza in its never before shape and look, guaranteed to captivate the new audiences and even the old ones who come and live again in the land of dreams and music.
