HCMC – Performance of Operetta “Die Fledermaus”

In America, the first full opera telecast from Europe is none other than “Die Fledermaus”, a production by Royal Opera House at Covent Garden (London) at the New Year’s Eve of 1977. Postponed a few hours to accommodate the evening slot for American audiences, the opera was embraced in its entirety from 8 to 11PM, thanks to Metromedia. The cast consisted of the big names such as Kiri Te Kanawa, Hermann Prey, Ryszard Karzyckowski, Hildegard Heichele, Paul Crook, Ben Luxon.

Johann Strauss II finished the work in one month and a half (exactly 42 days), with a theme somewhat distant from the economically depressed Vienna in 1870s. From 1860, The King of Waltz (himself cannot dance) seemed to engage a musical competition with Offenbach who dominated Paris, Europe’s musical and entertainment capital back in the days. “Die Fledermaus”, only his third opera, cemented Strauss’ name as one of the greatest ones in musical history. In 1874, the work was performed in Berlin and New York. In 1888, it received 199 runs at Vienna theater alone, and when Strauss was alive, “Die Fledermaus” became a part of over 200 big theaters all around. Since New Year’s Eve of 1900, “Die Fledermaus” remains a staple performance of Wiener Staatsoper every single year.

“Die Fledermaus” will have a one-evening on 8.pm December 29 at HCMC Opera House, only run as a spectacular finale for a musical year not only for HBSO, but also a wonderful year filled with captivating melodies and arresting musical moments.
