From the organizer:
Six Space cordially invites you to the screening of “In the Claws of a Century Waiting” and the discussion with the director, Jewel Maranan.
Anne gives birth to her third child. Akira learns reading and writing while foraging for scrap metal and coal. Eddie entertains himself to sleep with a broken TV before another night shift work at the port. Emelita prays over the funeral of her husband. Around them and their days, Manila’s busiest global port is expanding to their living spaces. Anne’s midwife, Paning, brings the news. In the Claws of a Century Wanting is a filmic symphony of increasing everyday violence preceding the construction of today’s ideal city.
The context:
The face of Metro Manila is changing. Hundreds of thousands of families living in the gaps and seams of the metropolis are in constant threat of displacement as 40% of Metro Manila’s population live in informal settlements located in areas targeted for commercial, industrial and real estate development. In 2014, the Philippine government has been implementing both violent and voluntary evictions at a rate of 200 households per day, under the banner of different city development projects geared towards increasing Manila’s viability for foreign trade and investments. At the heart of the city development is the expansion of the country’s main international port, located in the district of Tondo. Consequently, at the heart of eviction plans are also the communities of Tondo, one of the most densely populated areas in Manila and even in the world
