Film synopsis:
When the disastrous earthquake happened in Kobe in 1994, the Pritzker-winning Japanese architect Shigeru Ban used, for the very first time, his skills to help the Vietnamese refugees in Japan by building temporary homes and notably the Paper Church in Kobe in 1995. His research helped him to realize that there were many abandoned emergency shelters due to theirs inconveniences: being far away from workplaces, homes, and cultivation zones. Moreover, when the crisis is over, those temporary structures are abandoned and become unrecyclable wastes.
The documentary tells the story from the point when Shigeru Ban started experimenting with recycled paper tubes to when he applied the materials with his methods for emergency structures in the later years. Paper tubes are low-cost, recyclable materials that are easy to assemble in time of a natural disaster. Almost all of Ban’s emergency structures are built with the help and support from local students and volunteers.
The documentary also explain the process in which Shigeru Ban cooperated with architecture Frei Otto to design the Japan Pavilion at Expo 2000 in Hannover, Germany; and other projects that used the same methods, materials with the same careful attention and other basic knowledge: light, dark, and furnitures.
Shigeru Ban has worked his acument, his creativity to change the whole scheme of emergency architectural designs, turning them into beautiful, lively, eco-friendly, low-cost structures.
