From the organizer:
94 years ago, also in the middle of March, the first feature film of Vietnam based upon the classic poem “The story of Kieu” by Nguyen Du, Kim Van Kieu, was shown to the public. 94 years later, the dance performance “Kieu’s Story” will be presented to the public for the very first time, on the 10th and 11th of March, 2018, at Saigon Opera House, 7 Lam Son Square, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1. “Kieu’s Story”, a collaboration between a Korean choreographer and Vietnamese artists expressed through the richly colorful, yet abstract language of modern dance, promises to be an achievement that goes beyond mutual learning to become a product of a deep understanding of the engaging cultures.
The Story of Kieu is an endless inspiration, deeply Vietnamese magnum opus whose any adaptation proves a challenge not to be taken lightly, and therefore, one after another, a artistic fulfilment of highest levels. The dance performance of Kieu is no exception: it is brought to life thanks to the combination of the best of Vietnam’s and HBSO’s talents like Nguyen Phuc Hung, Tran Hoang Yen, Nguyen Thu Trang, Sung A Lung, Ho Phi Diep, and the unique interpretation of choreographer Chun Yoo Oh (Korea), who herself has contributed to works highly reflective of Vietnamese identity: Promise to 800, Mi Chau Princess, Arirang Saigon (and currently lives in Vietnam)
Attempting to reach beyond the classical artistic conventions, Chun Yoo Oh wishes to have the emotional depths be conveyed through creative choreographs, in order to evoke the traditional human values in the midst of modern society, as well as the deeply personal yet strangely universal nuances dwelling inside everyone of us: to live and to be allowed to choose the life that we want. The accompanying music, consisting largely of traditional musical instruments and folk substances, will for sure break through the modern façade to, alongside the dance movements, enter the audiences’ mind. Consider this merely a work of art, not constrained by the limitations of style or medium, rather a wonderful presentation of overflowing emotions put into order.
