Institut Français de HCM Ville is pleased to announce that Villa Saigon 2019 Artist-in-residence now receives applications.
Villa Saigon is created by Institut Français in Vietnam with the aim of promoting exchange & collaboration in arts between France and Vietnam.
The program is open to artists or collectives of French nationality or currently reside in France, of all disciplines, especially in contemporary arts. The residency will last from 4 to 12 weeks and the artists will collaborate with partners in Vietnam (other artists, organizations, cultural spaces,…) with whom their project will be carried out. This is one of the jury’s main criteria for selection: exchange, collaboration and integration with Vietnam’s cultural & art scene of Ho Chi Minh City.
Institut Français in Vietnam will support the artists in terms of accommodation and production expense & living costs during the residency. After the program ends, the artworks will be introduce to the public through various channels.
In 2018, 99 application were received.

Notable projects
Joined the artist-in-residence program in 2015 and 2016, stage director Caroline Guiela Nguyen came to Vietnam to research and select a number of young Vietnamese artists to create the play « Sài Gòn », which gained huge success at the Avignon Festival 2017, telling the story of the Vietnamese who moved to France in 1956 and their return to Vietnam in 1996. A French-Vietnamese story told through the lens of Vietnamese expats towards their motherland, the play is on a world tour ending in 2019.
On 21-22 Sep 2018, the play will be performed in HCMC. This is one of the big events organized in celebration of the 45th anniversary of the France – Vietnam diplomatic relation.

KillaSon – rapper, beatmaker and dancer – came to Vietnam on the French Miracle Tour 2017. The artist in residence program of Institut Français has supported him in writing and recording a record with Vietnamese rap band 95G. This French-Vietnamese production will be performed for the first time at Piu Piu – a platform for urban music at HCMC, then released commercially in France and other countries.

t.r.a.n.s.i.t.s.c.a.p.e was also welcomed at Villa Saigon 2017 Artist in residence. Together with the hip-hop queen of Vietnam Suboi and the talented young artist Teddy Chilla, they had had an unique performance at Saigon Opera House, an event within the framework of “Europe meets Asia” Contemporary Dance Festival. From 12/2017 until 01/2018, t.r.a.n.s.i.t.s.c.a.p.e collaborated with students from HCMC University of Fine Arts in the exhibition “La Sourire de la Mutation” at HCMC Fine Arts Museum.

Invited to HCMC in 01/2018 through the artist in residence program by Institut Français in Vietnam, choreographer Thierry Thieû Niang lead the contemporary dance program for the students of Lycée Français International Marguerite Duras, of HCMC Dance School and for the members of Vietnamese – France Friendship Association.
The event showcasing the result from the workshop took place at Salon Saigon. A film with footage from the dance practices are shown during the event, in the present of Thierry Niang and workshops’ participants. The audience had had the chance to discuss and listen to their experience when working on this project together.

In 2014, writer-stage director Marine Bachelot Nguyen came to Vietnam to research on the LGBT community here. She traveled through the country interviewing LGBT people, young LGBT activists in Hanoi and Saigon to collect stories, images and documentaries on the LGBT community in Vietnam. With the materials collected, Marine Bachelot Nguyen created the play « Bóng và ô môi » which debuted in France in 2016.
In March, she camed to HCMC to introduce to the public the recorded version of the play. After the screening, she and the members of ICS (an organization for equal rights of LGBTQ+ people in Vietnam) had had a discussion with the audience on the topic.
