Ca Trù (Vietnamese: [kaː tʂû], 歌籌, “tally card songs”) also known as hát ả đào or hát nói, is an ancient genre of chamber music featuring female vocalists, with origins in northern Vietnam. For much of its history, it was associated with a geisha-like form of entertainment, which combined entertaining wealthy people as well as performing religious songs for the royal court. Ca Trù is inscribed on the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in need of Urgent Safeguarding in 2009.
About artist Pho Thi Kim Duc and the group of Ca Trù singers Kim Duc Ca Quan:
Artist Pho Thi Kim Duc was born and raised in a family whose many members were Ca Trù singers and artists. She is one of the last Ca Trù singers that received professional traditional training, and a bridge which connects five consecutive generations of Ca Trù artists from her grandparents to her father, to her and her siblings, and now to her children and grandchildren whom she taught herself at home. Her class was lovingly named “Giáo Phường Ca Trù Kim Đức” (Kim Đức Ca Trù School) by her “students” to express their wishes of maintaining the family tradition and the rare art form in Ca Trù in Việt Nam.
